Bitcoin vs. USDT: which should you buy?

Both are supported for Buy Crypto. The right one depends on whether you're holding or moving money.

Buy Crypto supports two assets: Bitcoin (BTC) on the Bitcoin network, and Tether (USDT) on Tron (TRC-20). They solve different problems, so “which is better” depends entirely on what you’re about to do with it.

Bitcoin: for holding

Bitcoin’s price moves — sometimes a lot, in either direction over days or weeks. That volatility is the point if you’re buying because you want exposure to Bitcoin itself, not because you need a stable dollar amount to arrive somewhere. It’s also the more widely recognized and widely accepted of the two.

  • No separate asset fee on Bitcoin purchases through Buy Crypto.
  • Confirmations take longer than TRC-20 transfers, though most orders still complete within roughly 30 minutes.

USDT: for moving value

USDT is a stablecoin, pegged to the US dollar. A $500 USDT purchase is still worth close to $500 an hour, a day, or a week later, which makes it the better choice when the goal is moving dollar value somewhere else — into an exchange, to another wallet, or to someone who needs a specific amount rather than “some Bitcoin.”

USDT purchases carry a small asset fee on top of the standard service fee. Bitcoin does not. See how our fees work for the exact numbers.

A simple way to decide

Ask what happens to the money next. If you’re planning to hold it and don’t mind the price moving, Bitcoin is the straightforward choice. If you need the number to stay the same between now and when you spend or send it, USDT does that job. Neither is the “safer” choice in a compliance sense — this is purely about price behavior after the purchase.
